We are great fans of MS Access. Here are some of the reasons:
- Access enables rapid development of quite sophisticated applications supporting small groups.
- The rapid development ability also makes it suitable for prototyping larger scale systems.
- It is relatively inexpensive. Indeed many clients already have it installed as part of MS Office.
- The ability to integrate seamlessly with SQL server provides a clear migration path if scaling up is required
- It is widely supported meaning clients need not be dependent on any one vendor or developer.
Of course there are downsides. One is the very ease of creating a basic application in MS Access. An application can quickly grow beyond the ability of the amateur developer to support. Unfortunately this generally happens at the same time as the application has become mission critical. DFD has had significant experience in rescuing such applications. We are happy to report that in all cases the patient has thrived.
